Mario and Luigi are back! And they are fun as ever.... Our very nice friends from Nintendo has offered us an early release to try out this wonderful and much anticipated game. For some of us who still remember how the original game is like, this certainly sent us down memory lane while showing us how much the video game industry has changed.
The first thing we noticed is that this game, as expected, is a hybrid of many previous generations of Super Mario Bros games. The graphics are vibrant, and the characters move very smoothly on the DS screens. (ok, these screen shots don't show all the bright colors, but trust us that it is!) We did our best in photographing the screens from our reviewers DS, who spent hours on end after receiving the test copy to almost finish the entire game!

There are a total of 8 worlds, so it's not a terribly long game to play, at least we don't expect you will need to play more than a few days to pass all the worlds... assuming you are dedicated enough. There is an interim boss and a big boss to guard against each world. Just like old times, you do have to beat them in sequence. There are 2 chances to save your game in each world. Right after you beat the boss, you will be prompted to save your game.
One of the best things about playing the game on the DS platform is the dual screen, where the top shows all the main movement and action, while the lower screen will keep track and show your progress, collected gold coins, additional power-ups, mushrooms, fire flowers, tortoise shells, stars, etc.

Besides the brothers, you will also see many familiar enemies from the old days. Nintendo makes it clear this game is done to attract both people like us (no, not telling you how old we are) and also the new younger generation. As such, they have designed the game to have the same now-classic background and music, just like old times. But they have also added some new elements like mini games, plenty to choose from, and you can also play those in 2-player and 4-player mode!
New Mushrooms:
There s a new blue-ish looking mushroom that will make Mario shrink to a smaller size. It's cool and needed if you need to get to some hard to reach places, and in this mode - Mario can hang in the air longer, and even walk on water! The bad news is that when Mario is in this mode, he is vulnerable to all enemies - even the faithful step-over maneuvers can't kill his enemies - watch out! Basically touch anything and he dies.
Then there is the Huge mushroom power-up mode and Mario becomes giant Mario. His size grows so much that it looks like it will burst out of the screen! The King-kong sized Mario can be stopped by nothing, not even a brick wall. You will see a destructive meter at the top, which indicates how much he has ruined, a maximum of 5-ups will be awarded if you do enough damage. But all good things come to an end, as this magic form has a time limit ... but it's certainly fun while it lasted. It's kinda like a "godzilla mode" if you will.

New Flying cloud:
Remember the cloud? Now in New Super Mario Bros. you can sit on and take control of the cloud! Find it, jump on top of it to kill the enemy there, and use the controls to fly, and travel in style!

Some other tips:
The big tortoise is always the interim boss, just step on it 3 times or fire at him and it will finish him. Be sure to have the fire flower handy before engaging the big boss.
You can also collect additional power-ups and save them in the lower touch screen, then tap on them when you need it! Try to save some of these power-ups when you are roaming through the worlds, saving the fire flower for the big boss will give you an unfair advantage and certainly make life easier!
The New Super Mario Bros game is also easier for those new to the game. If you run out of lives, relax! You won't have to start from World-1-1 again. You will start again with 5 lives in hand at the nearest checkpoint. Excitement will be high, but frustration should not be.
Try to find the huge magic mushroom early on, but don't consume it until it almost drops into the drain. This will give you the maximum amount of time to do the most damage. Run and jump as quickly as possible and destroy obstacles on the way, and if you run fast enough and get to the flag pole at the end in time, you will be rewarded with 5-ups. Once that happens, you are indeed Super Mario!!

RenChi's view:
We are sure that this New Super Mario Bros. will get high scores from all those reviews that follow ours, but ultimately, it's how much fun we had (and still having) while playing this classic reborn. The characters, the theme, the music, the new twists, and the new mini games, Mario, Welcome Back!
